Old Hong Kong Kitchen at Imbi Area

It was a night that I stayed over in the office for a night conference. There was couple of hours that I had nothing to do before the meeting, so I went out to hunt for food, preferably some new things to try or some new restaurants.

I was sauntering in my car around the Imbi area, and I stumbled across this restaurant...

The Old Hong Kong Kitchen 佬香港小鲜.

Initially, friend and I were hesitated to try as the outlook looks grand like the old Eden Seafood Restaurant...

And no customer at all in the restaurant! But belum cuba belum tau, never try never know, we finally parked the car and walked into the restaurant. It's either one time customer or we would return for more.

The restaurant has open air and air conditioned areas. The putera lilin, prince of candle whom can't resist heat like me definitely picked the air cond room and the setup looks like this...

After spending few minutes on the menu, these were what we ordered...

I had fresh oysters (RM8/pc) as my starter...

Very huge oysters indeed!

Old Hong Kong styled fried rice (RM16)...

"Looked" very old with brownish color. I wonder how does "new" Hong Kong styled fried rice look and taste like? Hehe...

Pork platter (~RM25)...

BBQ pork...

Roasted pork...

With the chili sauce and mustard for the platter...

Finally a bowl of Chinese herb soup (RM6) to complete a wholesome meal...

We were not really hungry at that time, but still the dishes were tasted good! The fried rice was fried evenly that the rice wasn't stick to each other and we couldn't find a white rice at all. Meaning, it's perfectly fried! The pork was balance in fat and flesh, the BBQ pork was not too sweet and the roasted pork was crispy with no extra fat and oil spilled from your mouth! We thought could it because we were the only customer and the chef really cooked hard for us? Not only the food, I also felt honored with the service that I was like a billionaire who booked the entire restaurant for a romantic candle light dinner. The only missing piece was a violin player. Hehe...

But why no customer? I googled around internet whether other bloggers have the same review like mine, I hardly find any blog about this restaurant. Perhaps it's still new, I found out from the waitress that it's only 3 months in business. The restaurant needs more marketing to attract crowd, especially it's located off the main road. Or may be it looks too grand for a reasonable priced meal for wage earner.

So, with good tongue experience and nice customer service, no doubt I will pay second visit to the restaurant. And I found out this before I left...

The deal looks good. That perhaps could be my second visit for a dim sum lunch.

Here is the location...

36, Jalan Utara, Off Jalan Imbi.

Floating Tree

There is one Chinese proverb, 万丈高楼从地起. Direct translation means, every high rise building starts from the ground. In other words, everything must have foundation to begin with before moving high to ensure stability.

This applies to how you survive in this human world. If you are just a talk cock guy without real qualifications, you wouldn't sustain long especially in the corporate world. Same goes to flora world as well, a tree without strong root and trunk would not survive during storms and realistically, how could a tree grow without a trunk from the ground? In particular, a palm tree?

A typical palm tree should look like this...

Look at what I found out from the recent Ipoh trip...

The palm tree is hanging in the air without trunk!

Amazing right? Since it is in Perak, may be it's due to current political uncertainty and instability in the state? Hmmm...

You can go to this hotel to find out the truth...

Do drop me a message once the truth is found ;)

The Joy That Made My Day

Monday blue~ especially after a long haul journey over weekend.

As usual, I reached office 7:30am, while the company laptop took its time, as long and slow as 30 minutes to boot up, I had my "mental breakfast" reading the free newspaper theSun...

The bottom of the cover page caught my attention...

Look familiar? Ha! I just blogged about it on 18 Feb! 5 days earlier than the media!

Hmmm... Was anyone from theSun visited my blog?

May be I'm really good to be a paparazzi. Contact me if you are from media company. :P

I played the video again, darn funny!! And oh, half of my Monday blue gone! What a joy!!

It's Cinema Time! Transformer 2 Is Coming!!

Hooray! Transformer 2 in is making now!!

The trailer has been leaked to youtube...

I watched the first episode twice. Not that I liked the storyline, you'd know, typical Hollywood movie to promote American-Heroism just like ID4. But Transformers is my most favorite cartoon since kid till now, I believe it is for many guys in the same generation.

That also means, in the coming time when the movie is shown on the big screens, I need to find opportunity to fly to US and to allocate budget for my shopping!

In my previous trip to US, I spoiled myself shopping in Walmart for this...

The Ultimate Class Bumblebee. Priced at USD $89 compared to almost RM400 over here.

And my bro bought me this...

The Leader Class Night Watch Optimus Prime.

Standing side by side. Look here guys, 1 2 3 say cheese...

Handsome or not? Transformers, more than meet the eyes~

But, I am not satisfied yet. I am targeting my "lovest" Takara Master Piece Gen-1 Optimus Prime...

Not the MP-1 Convoy but the MP-4 with trailer...

Saw it in Singapore's Marks & Spencer building at Orchard Road, can't remember the building name. It's SGD $420 list price, RM1000+ after forex.

If budget allows, I am also interested with Master Piece MP-3 Decepticon Starscream...

Plus if I fall in love with other robots in the coming Transformers 2.

Hold on... Too little $ too many to buy. I need to rob bank wei!!

My New Ringtone. For Someone Special

I certainly believe that everyone with mobile phone experienced this before. You try to find a song to be used as ringtone for someone special to you. Not necessary only to the loved one, but may be also to your boss, like Mission Impossible ringtone assigned to your boss' number to illustrate that you've got a new mission from boss whenever the MI ringtone alerts you.

Ringtone with matching agenda is easy to find, for instance, a love song assigned as ringtone to your honey's number, a kid song for your kids, a heavy metal rock song for your buddies and so forth. But have you ever found a song that has the name of the person whom you wanted to assign the ringtone to? No doubt it's easier to find such song as ringtone if the person has a common English name like David, Mike etc, what about Chinese name like Ah Beng and Ah Lian?? Now you learn the difficulty right, don't you? Hehe...

Fortunately, I'm lucky and blessed.

Recently I found a song that it has the name of the person in its lyric. This person is special to me. She makes me laugh and cheers me up, always. Oh~ Life is so dull without her.

Let me share with you the MV of the song...

Now you should know her name. Yes, it is Ling Ling 玲玲.

Imagine whenever she calls, my phone rings "玲玲玲玲我有噑问 问吓我嘅桃花运~" (Ling Ling Ling Ling I have something to ask, I want to ask my romance fate)...

Cool right? LoL.

Without her, I've got no one to fool, to tease and to ridicule in the office. No no no, I am not that bad, she also enjoys being fooled and always laugh together. Hehe...

Now the ringtone has been set, I am eagerly waiting for her call, everyday! But I won't pick up the call immediately, I will let the ringtone to play completely before I answer, and everybody knows Ling Ling 玲玲 is calling me. Haha!

And I also like to make friend with you if you are Ling Ling 玲玲 too. Don't hesitate to drop me a message and I hope to have your number on my phone with Ling Ling 玲玲 ringtone. Hehe...

P/S: this post has no intention at all to insult anyone. It's just a sharing of joy in daily life of a good friendship with my peer who called Ling Ling 玲玲.

What Is Your Reaction If You Miss Your Flight?

Today was a bit relaxing in the office. I was wrapping some of my tasks in preparation of new assignment. Same to my "peer M", he was finding a way to wrap up his long pending project due to lack of response from the blurry vendor.

As usual, the other one "peer I" was too enjoying life with crappy workshop while counting down his upcoming business trip on March. We were teasing him that the trip would be his "honey moon" as he will be traveling with another auntie who likes to drag him for chat on any topics.

Well, I wouldn't want to describe in details about the auntie. In short, a 40+ auntie always act and talk like kawaii and Chi Ling. *_*|| That's nothing wrong though as each individual has his or her own characteristics, but what would you think if that's the "weapon" (talk innocently) she uses to the bosses to back-stab you?

Anyway, we were on the business trip topic, one of the peers shared that he got to know from a local radio station, a funny reality shot in youtube about missing flight. View it yourself here...

Damn it! We were laughing till upside down when watching the video secretly in the office. We couldn't laugh out loud as our office is open space concept. And one funny question popped up, "hmmm... How would the auntie react if same incident happen to her?" We then asked the "peer I" to try it out during his trip, try to miss the flight and take good video if the auntie reacts the same. That definitely would be the best joke of the century in my company! Haha! Damn bad huh?!

For once I missed my flight when I was in US. I was on hot flaming debate with my old boss till that I left an hour remaining before my flight schedule. It generally takes 45 minutes to commute from office to the airport but I managed to make it in 30 minutes, well, in Klang mari driving style, zig-zagging between lanes and cut queue on American highway. Note that American is driving on the opposite side from BullehLand. Hehe... Nevertheless I was still denied to check in to the planned flight. My first reaction to the officer was "That's good! I wish I would also miss my connecting flight back to KL so I can check in LA hotel for a night. Who cares?!" I was moody after the hot debate. Hehe... Of course the officer did not allow that to happen, she immediately put me onto the next available flight. I just couldn't imagine if that auntie was with me, and if I ever travel alone with that auntie. God bless and touch wood!

Now bad buggers like peer M and me are hoping something happen during peer I's trip with auntie. I shall share out if there's interesting incident. :P

How To Format A Thumb Drive

Recently few of my friends bought thumb drives for torrent (bit torrent) activities.

You might be wondering why not hard disk with bigger disk capacity but thumb drive? That's an experience learning. One of the friends uses the laptop 24x7 for non-stop torrenting and finally the hard disk crashed after it couldn't take anymore load. I suspected it was due to the download activities. BT is not a one way activity but it's 2-way that other users are downloading from you as well. And due to this, the hard disk is exhaustively spinning for read and write activities and eventually reaching its life span much earlier and go on RIP. Condolence~

Some torrent software has some thing like advanced disk caching feature but still, to my opinion, it is better to rest the hard disk from the torrent activities. More importantly, it may not be the money matters but the value of other personal data that you keep in the same hard disk.

With USB thumb drives advancing from 4 to 8GB, now widely available 16GB and a little premium to pay for 32GB, I suggested why not just get a few thumb drives and plug them to the USB ports and save the torrent downloads to the drive? That definitely offloads the hard disk while offers portability to share the downloads easily plus you may pass on the download activities to other helpers if you need to shut down your PC for few days. And if the drive is damaged, you only lose the particular download. No big deal and just need to re-download. Sound cool huh?

The idea was taken. A bugger even went to the extent to get a powered USB port replicator for more torrent activities! *_*|| memang kiasu!

However, we immediately encountered a show stopper.

Most thumb drives come in FAT32 file system for widest compatibility with various operating systems, Windows, Mac etc and fit for general use by most users. A piece of technical info you need know, that FAT32 can only support a maximum file size of 4GB in a single file. Meaning, if you have a file with size more than 4GB, with a FAT32 formatted drive, be it thumb drive or hard disk, you will not be able to copy/create/move the file to the drive. And because of this technical limitation, we couldn't download compressed 720p or 1080p HD files, which are no doubt more than 4GB per file, to the drive without reformatting the drive to NTFS file system.

Can't just you format the drive by right clicking on the drive and select Format and pick NTFS as file system? As easy as the post title, right? Indeed, yes. That was my answer to all my peers until they printed this screen asking my help. Nope, I should say they screwed me like nobody business before asking my help since I was the culprit recommending them to buy thumb drives...

It reads "NTFS is not supported on this device optimized for removal. To change the way this device is optimized, select the Properties tab in the device's property sheet."

This was the first time they hit by this error and me too, it's my first time to see this message. I've formatted so many thumb drives, converting from FAT or FAT32 to NTFS with no error at all. I suspect that the manufacturers changed their design which caused error in formatting new batch of drives with higher capacity. I read through the error message and roughly had the idea where to start my troubleshooting.

I went to My Computer on the desktop, right clicked and selected Manage to open up the Computer Management Console. Clicked on Device Manager, expanded Disk Drives, right clicked on the thumb drive (Kingston Data Traveler) and selected Properties...

Oh, make sure you have your thumb drive plugged in and you have administrator privilege on the computer.

I then clicked on Policies tab, and saw this screen...

Some terms similar to the error. The default setting was "Optimized For Removal". I chose the other option, "Optimized For Performance" and clicked OK.

I then retried to format. And bingo! No more error after the first attempt on troubleshooting!!!

I changed back to "Optimize for removal" after format and tested lightly few times to remove the drive without legally using the Safely Remove Device option, the files are still intact, no corruption at all. But it may need thorough test before conclusion. Safest is to remove the device properly with Safely Remove Device option, better safe than sorry. Anyway, this isn't an issue to us 'cause we will not be removing the drive so often, it's stuck like an ice cream stick at the PC most of the times to perform its duty.

Now everyone was relieved that they did not spend idiot $ for the thumb drives, and I was confidently and proudly yelling back at them, "trust lah your personal IT consultant!!" An after-fact show off. :P

Bird Nest For Lunch!!

Retrenchment, VSS, pay cut, downturn, meltdown, shrink down, downsize and all other negative terms you can think off. These are the current economy related terms that very often you can read on the newspapers nowadays.

Obviously everybody struggles for survival, one would not relate enjoyment and classy lifestyle amid this crisis moment, let alone luxurious meals like bird nests.

But look at this...

A bowl of bird nest soup! It's for lunch! Look at the bird nest...

And that's the one and only one slice in the bowl. How much for a bowl?

Hehe... Actually it's not unexpectedly expensive like RM20 or more per bowl, it's just RM9.90 for a bowl of bird nest soup with red dates and ginkgo. The price quite OK right? I mean, if occasionally say once a week or bi-weekly to enjoy the soup for a wage earner like majority of us. Especially if that believes to have soothing effect on the throat, like my friend who has been suffering sore throat for quite some time. Pity.

Of course you've gotta set your expectation right before you go for it. For the amount you pay for the bowl, don't expect RM999 worth of bird nest. Taste wise, I believe nothing to comment about it 'cause dessert like this is easily acceptable by many with less objections.

So where can get this affordable bird nest soup? Here is the restaurant...

Ah Yip Herbal Soup 阿叶靓汤.

There is this Chinese Herbal Shop name printed on the menu too...

德生堂 since 1941. Certainly this is the herbal shop that supplies all the herbs for Ah Yip restaurant. I could not find any history about this herbal shop/restaurant, I guess the herbal shop was the primary business in the past and eventually evolved with the restaurant for business diversity, a good idea indeed!

The restaurant not only serving herbal soups, but it has set lunch like above and other varieties of meals for you to choose. So you can have a healthy meal at the restaurant, if they cook it healthy way. The price is reasonable, at least it's cheaper than KLCC food court and KFC, and healthier too. I paid RM13.80+ for the set lunch that comes with white steamed rice, a ginger sauced duck and vegetable, a bowl of soup, a drink (herbal honey) with a free herbal jelly as dessert. If you are not a big eater, it can be shared for two.

Google Ah Yip Herbal Soup and you can find numerous detailed reviews and its branches. I went to Low Yat branch and this is the first time I had my meal at this restaurant, so will definitely discover more, and may be more food reviews in the future visits.

Jacko, the Paparazzi

In Hong Kong, it's so common that you can bump into celebrity at anytime anywhere on the street. Or on the daily life, you may encounter some shootings are taking place at public area. It's so normal till no one, well, I mean Hong Kong residents care to stop by and kepoh what is happening. Some might even condemn if the shooting obstructs and causes traffic congestion.

Over here in BullehLand, it's hard to see such thing on day to day. And for minor bumper-to-bumper car accident on the road, or as minor as car towing by the road side, it's no surprise that the traffic will just get paralyzed, even on the opposite direction. Why? We Malaysian are damn kepoh busybody mah and we just like to be kepoh and watch but sorry, don't get me involved! That's Malaysia Bulleh attitude. Therefore, what say if such shooting is taking place here? Definitely it draws crowd, but not me. I usually come out with !@#$%^&*() when I stuck in traffic jam if such things (and accidents) happen and the passengers would get screwed by me if ask me to stop or slow down in most occasions. That's just impatient me. Hehe...

In one of the days after work, I felt like going out for happy hour and headed to Jaya One for drink. It's the 3rd time in a week I was there. Hmmm... start liking this place. And there was an advertisement shooting in action. This wasn't the first time I saw shooting like this, but since we were still undecided which cafe to go and we did not obstruct traffic and others' businesses, so I turned myself into a "paparazzi" to spy shot the advertisement. First hand scenes for your first eye viewing at Jacko.MY before it shows on TV screens!! ;)

Very obvious, the whole scene was so dull in color but you could see the big red vending machine there. It's the Coca Cola ads, I believe for local screens. You can see the leading actor was getting better after each NG. Not only 3 NG, the director asked to replay for few more times. I gave up after 3 NG. Hehe...

I almost go on air like this with my lovely FD not long ago. Aiks, it did not happen at the end due to unexpected circumstance. I would imagine I might just throw the bottle to the director after 3rd NG, 'cause I lost my patience. Haha... Nothing would happen if I were Brad Pitt or Takeshi Kaneshiro 金城武, but I think I would get a "Beckham kick" from the director on my butt since I am not. Hehe... As far as I know it's few thousands bucks for like a 48 hours contract per ads. Good money right? So who knows I might just have patience with the $$. Hehe...

Let me nag my friend again, see if there's any "opportunity". :P And let's see if my Jack Bond's recording is similar to the final TV commercial...

Last Day of CNY, the Chap Goh Meh

Today is Chap Goh Meh, the 15th and the last day of CNY. It's also the Chinese Valentine's Day and a match making day that singles gather at river or sea or lake or pond for "throw mandarin orange" event like what was posted over here. This year the Chap Goh Meh isn't any special, I remember there was a year that Western Valentine's Day was on the same day with Chinese Valentine's Day. Next year, perhaps a bit special where 1st day of CNY will fall on 14 Feb 2010. If your another is not from the same kampung, you may want to start thinking of the best way to celebrate it, since traditionally you have to stay with your family on the first day of CNY. Think ahead now. Hehe...

But, I did not intend to blog about this Valentine thingy. In fact, I am trying to talk about my "CNY business", realistically. No business, no $$ then how to celebrate Valentine's Day, right? Hehe...

Let's look at my "business outcome"...

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9... Two-O-O-Nine I got only nine ang paus! A huge reduction in quantity (number of ang pau I received)! More than 50% reduction, the impact of global economy recession :(

What about "quality" (RM amount in the red packet)?

Individually (count each ang pau separately), I still received "ISO certified quality angpau". Hehe... but few dropped in "quality". Overall, the "quality" dropped almost 40%. I even received warning, "eh! When you want to stop receiving?!" LoL.

Now I really hit by the impact of economy down turn. May be I shall plan a strategy next year on how to maximize my "business return" in this economy hard time. Hehe...

Oh, by the way, if I have not greeted you, allow me to say so on the last day of CNY: Happy Chinese New Year and Gong Xi Fatt Chai!

Hero

Not the popular TV series, but...

He is called Hero.

He memang a hero. Why?

In one of the weekends when my cousin visited me, she brought along Hero to my house, asked if I would like to keep him. My cousin was about to oversea, needing someone to take care of her pet.

I looked at Hero...

Cute huh?

Eventually I refused, and fortunately I made the right decision.

Imagine a brand new full leather sofa set with a puddle of urine on top; imagine you could find chocolate fudge (shits) every where even in your house and imagine you found out you left only one side of your shoe early in the morning when you were rushing to office.

Now you should understand why I said I was lucky. My uncle and aunt are now in headache, till my cousin returns from oversea. Hehe...

Further, I don't like something that is useless (toy breeds), such dog cannot guard your house. And my favorite dog is always this...

The German Shepherd.

After seeking professional advice, I need to have bigger house with bigger compound for German Shepherd. Similar to relationship, when I want to breed a pet, I want to give my best to it. So I shall wait till I have bigger house.

Hmmm... when will that happen?

Jenjarom FGS Dong Zen 佛光山 东禅寺 Temple

It was one of the days in CNY I got bored to visiting houses, and wanted to travel a little for something new. I wanted to visit this temple since 2 3 years ago but it was never materialized until this year of Ox.

It's just a quick trip to ponder around the temple, in particular for the lighting, I did not fully explored the temple. Surprisingly there weren't many blogs about this temple when I made a search in technorati, perhaps 1 day I should return there for more detailed discovery.

Anyway, some photos to share here. I would recommend this temple to those who have interest in photography, a good place for photography.

This post might take a little longer to load due to numbers of photos.

The hall...

Another hall for sutra calligraphy 抄经堂...

What you need to do...

And start calligraphing on this sheet...

Photography was not really disallowed but it's also not encouraged in this hall so you don't disturb those who are concentrating. Meaning, I was doing something bad in the hall, in front of a sleeping Buddha! Hehe...

The temple is also seeking some talents...

If you were unfortunate to lose the job due to economy meltdown, this could be an alternative. Look into the hall for openings, some even with oversea opportunities...

Going upstairs to the Relics Shrine...

I did not enter the shrine 'cause it's too crowded. Further, you need to wear socks to enter the shrine, you can buy it there though.

Another hall building...

Apparently having book fair in the hall...

Some outdoor photos...

Who say temple must be very serious? Cute figures...

The garden where Buddha was born...

I wished it was called Lamborghini Garden. Hehe... :p Berdosa ni...

The flora garden...

Supposedly to have taken some flora photos but I was rushing for a dinner. So, only the big moooo~

If you wish to visit there for photography, I recommend to arrive at evening time, say 6pm so that the sky is still bright allowing you to take photos of flowers in the garden. When the night falls and the lights are on, then you can take photos on the lighting. However, I believe tomorrow is the last day for the CNY program, check out the event timetable here.

Location, search Fo Guang Shan in MFM or MSM map.
