HDI Dune Prime 3.0 Part 2

Okay, after unbox in Part 1, I hook up the player with my HP 2509p for some tests. Since my Mega Project is still on its way, this is the only setup I can have, no advanced setup with AV receiver and surround speakers. Meaning, I will not be able to test out some advanced features this player is capable of, such as the Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD-MA passthrough and whatnot. Perhaps that shall come in 2 - 3 months time.

Despite of that, let's power it up for some basic tests...

The boot up is flashy, the player comes to serve you in about 30 seconds. Here's the main screen you see...

Very simple and familiar layout, just like the typical Windows desktop. Now I will let the photos do the talking, let's go into setup, screen by screen....

In General, only 2 options available...

Now the more interesting setup, Video...

It supports the deep color 12 bit! Too, it supports HDMI Consumer Electronic Controls CEC. In layman term, the color is richer if your display such as LCD/LED/Plasma supports 12bit deep color, whereas CEC allows you to control HDMI inter-connected devices with a single remote controller if all devices are CEC compliant and compatible. For instance, when you power on your player then the LCD TV may be powered up when it detects the alive signal from the player.

Now another juicy setup, the Audio...

What matters most is the bit stream option. Meaning, this player is capable of passthrough the audio signal to an AV Receiver and let the receiver to do the job. However, as mentioned in Part 1, the novice user will be happy with the decode option and the player will output the signals through analog audio out, including the analog 7.1 audio out if the movie comes with 7.1 audio.

Move on to Network setup...

Not much to play around here. It's either DHCP or manual IP, and it supports a compatible USB Wifi dongle.

The Appearance setup, just like what you have in Windows...

Next, the Application setup...

This is where you control the application settings and their appearance on the main screen. I hide the Torrent and show the IPTV, then the main screen becomes like this...

Navigate to Miscellaneous setup...

Apparently this part is juicier with all the user-concerned options like encoding, playback options. Also, the Gigabit network is only experimental and you get a warning when enabling it. A search on Google found out that the Sigma chip (the brain of this player) does not officially support Gigabit. Sigh~ Anyhow, I don't have a Gigabit switch to test this option.

One last section, the Information setup...

Nothing configurable here. The system storage field indicates this player supports internal hard disk, this was confirmed with a search on Google and MPC Club. I am not going to tear it apart as there's a warranty sticker on the screw.

Well, let me prepare the USB drive for some playback testing and share with you guys in the next post.

  1. Bro, just wanted to ask..i have planned to get this as well..the planned is to connect the player to LCD TV via HDMI..and to edifier x-540 speaker since the player can decode analog 5.1 sound..

my question is, how good the sound coming from this setup..i m not the audiophile but is it comparable with the sound coming from my onboard soundcard to the same speaker?

  2. I don't play HTPC so can't compare with on board soundcard. Imagine the player is doing all the decode and output jobs, and I think the volume may be a little limited. But if your onboard sound chip is normal sound chip, then this setup is worth trying.
