My New Wireless ADSL Router

Ever since the success of my NAS, in particular that my BT download is 24x7 now. However, the network was not able to accommodate the traffic. The cause was the aging router I had...

The D-Link DSL-G604T wireless ADSL router.

I had to reset the router almost everyday! The ADSL connection was persistent but nobody in the home network could connect to internet until a reset. Meaning, my BT downloads were all halted too! Not only that, the router just can't support more than one port forward rule, the subsequent rules after the first one just did not work without any error. Furthermore, I was testing my sis' router and for unknown reason it got fried. What a bad week to me (another story to tell~)!

No internet means no life to me. So without much study but quick read on few reviews, I went to Low Yat to get my new router...

The Linksys WAG54G2.

Unwrapped the box...

Cool design huh? An UFO like design.

A reminder sticker covered all the ports at the back...

So I inserted the CD to see what miracle would happen...

Bull shit! I ejected the CD and DIY. Within second, I was connected to the router admin interface. And within few minutes, it's up and running!

LELA??!! Linksys Easy Link Advisor?!

You'd know, not that easy to become advisor and LELA failed to setup my network within minutes even all the necessary cables were plugged in properly. I suggest you rather get JELA, Jacko Expert Lengchai Advisor to help you.

This router wasn't my first choice though. I wanted an all-in-one wireless ADSL router with support of wireless N and gigabits ethernet ports. Unfortunately, there is no router in this world with such specification at the moment. You can find many wireless router such as Linksys WRT610N (my initial target), but these routers are only a wireless N router without ADSL support. After some thoughts, I decided to get an interim router until I can get one that meets my requirements in the future. In addition, wireless 802.11n specification is still in its draft mode version 2.0, this is good to further support my decision as I wouldn't want to get a pricey router (the wireless N routers double the price of any wireless G routers) which the supported technology is still in draft mode.

But why Linksys? First, Aztech is never in my list as my very first ADSL modem given by Streamyx was an Aztech which gave me headaches until I changed to a China brand ZTE modem! Second, many condemns on Belkin routers behaved like my D-Link router especially by those hardcore BT downloaders like me. Third, Netgear, one of my preferred choices beside Linksys but it's very uncommon in Low Yat nowadays, only 1 or 2 stores carry the products (why?). Fourth, D-Link?! Not again! That explains how I narrowed my choice on brand to Linksys, in addition that Cisco brand gave me some extent of confidence plus many of my Hi-Def members use and give thumb ups to Linksys WRT52G.

Fortunately, I made a right choice even it priced RM50 more than other brands mentioned above. The router has been running without glitches since the night I made it connected!

It has been in this condition for 3 weeks plus! With the DSL and internet LEDs light up all times! With 18 non-stop downloads inclusive of 4 torrents seeding 24x7 from my NAS, browsing, some heavy HTTP downloads from my Wind and PC, and online audio streaming from the NAS. It's more stable than my previous D-Link router, which is now landed at my sis' house for her light use.

This certainly builds my confidence on LinkSys products. I love its UFO design, I love its wireless range (it's strong even without external antenna) and of course I love its stability. 3 things I don't like about it is the lousy LELA program, it did not impact my setup and usability though but it could frustrate other non-IT users in initial setup. The second is the firmware that does not have the feature to reserve DHCP IP. In other words, the router will not always assign the same IP to a PC or device, this is practically a drawback if you have internal servers which is external/internet facing with port forwarding. Not a show stopper though, you can still assign static IP on the server manually. The last is there is no "reboot router" feature in the firmware. Not a big deal since the router is so solid steady in its operations. The workaround is to make some redundant changes and click save settings.

Nevertheless, my next router is definitely another Linksys, if there is no competing product from Netgear.

Bitter Life, Better Man

Chinese proverb says 吃得苦中苦, 方为人上人. It translates to one can become better man if he learns to survive in his suffering life. In sarcastic way, the more you suffer the better you would be. In short, as per title, bitter life, better man.

Is this the right way? Let me try to "bitterize" my life to see if I become a better man.

What is this plant?

Do you see the gourds at the bottom?

It's bitter gourd. 2 down there. Another 2 inside...

1 more here...

Few more in process, the yellowish flower...

So? How to become "better man" with bitter gourds?

Drink it! Like this...

Stir and drink...

You will feel "better" once you drink the bitter juice. From the "i" (idiot) in bitter transforms to the "e" (elite) in better. Hence, better man. Hehe...

Enough talk cock :P

I hated bitter gourd since kid. I used to avoid whatever dishes cooked with bitter gourd. Worse, I even refused to eat the next dish cooked after the bitter gourd dish by my mom! Because I could still taste the bitterness! My dad very bad, always forced me to drink bitter gourd soup and I hated my mom whenever she cooked bitter gourd dishes or soup or whenever I saw bitter gourds in the refrigerator.

But now I am "better man".

I have a cup of this every morning to start my day. Of course it's not plain bitter gourd juice, I mix with green apple and carrot to neutralize some bitterness. Yet, I can still taste the strong bitterness, but I love it. I even ask my mom, "so little bitter gourds you cut for me?! I want more!" And baby bitter gourd is very hard to get in the market, and because of supply-demand (I want more) theory, my mom therefore decided to have a try, plant it. This is why I have these photos.

It's quite simple, no fertilization required, just let it grow by itself. You can harvest it after 2 weeks.

However, it's now like this...

Not because of over harvest, but kill it! Hehe...

I must mention that I hate insects. Flies, mosquitoes, ants etc etc. They bite when you sleep; they disrupt when you eat; they eat your favorite food when you unnoticed etc etc. I hate them all so much. I see one kill one 见一只杀一只, kill wrong than let go 有杀错无放过. The plant attracted insects and the insects trespassed my room! And because of this, it reached its destiny - I had my mom to chop it off, and have to pay more visits to pasar pagi (morning market) and pasar malam (night market) to hunt for baby bitter gourds. Thanks mom!

But why a sudden change to eat bitter gourd after 20 plus years to avoid it? Thanks to someone who wanted to share the meal with me and the meal was bitter gourd noodle. Smart! Apparently I was cheated intentionally to eat bitter gourd for the first time and now I start eating bitter gourd because of this smartie.

And may be because of this experience, I become better man now. Don't boo at me, at least I am better in health. :P

Melaka, A Family Getaway

Melaka or Malacca, a historical state and a state that I spent 2 years of my uni life. It's about 1.5 hours from Klang Valley and 2 hours from the Kiasu Land. Since my bro just got his new car 2 weeks ago, it's lot easier to arrange a trip in between Singapore and KL, which is Melaka, a good place for weekend getaway if you have family members living apart in Singapore.

We checked into a hotel in town center...

The Mahkota Hotel. It used to be called Century Mahkota, located at the back of Mahkota Parade.

Initially we picked Equatorial Hotel but switched to Mahkota Hotel as we wanted an apartment than 2 hotel rooms. We were told to be prepared on the room condition in Mahkota Hotel and not to have hope at all for a good apartment. Since it's only a night, we took the risk.

When reached, I looked at the exterior of the apartment...

Not that bad what, quite well maintained with evergreen flowers at the car park floor and the paint looks like newly painted.

We parked the car and walked to the lift lobby...

Ok, got a dent on the door. Wonder if Hercules stays here?

Moved up to the floor, held our breath and opened the door...

Not bad right? The rooms and mattresses were tidy, the toilets were clean, the living hall and kitchen were neat too. Phew~ no cockroach and lizard found, main criteria for me to judge a hotel.

What about the view? I went room-by-room to capture the views...

Since we stayed at high floor, so no worries on the noise from the traffic. And the panoramic from the balcony facing Mahkota Parade...

Then the little cutie wanted to go playground, so we went out to find out what amenities the hotel has...

The pool area was manned with lifeguards, should be safe for kids. There is another bigger pool...

Although some of the furniture and facilities show some aging effects, but the overall condition is still good. A good hotel for family outing, you don't even need to drive out if your kids are happy with the pool and playground. And because of its strategic location, it's very convenient that you can walk to Mahkota Parade, Dataran Pahlawan, Carrefour and hang out at the Jetty. If you have emergency, the Mahkota Medical Center (look at one of the photos above) is also within walking distance. Hehe... :P

Am I sound like a travel agent? Ha! I think so, but I am not a sales agent for Mahkota Hotel nor running a travel agency business. It's because these are the only photos I took during my trip, I didn't have any free time for photos when visiting Jonker Street, durian cendol, chicken rice ball, it's precious time to have fun with the little cutie, every millisecond counts. ;)

Mesra Usia Emas

I talked about this program 3 months ago. And because of so much of Malaysia-Hollywood or Mallywood movies in the political world of this BullehLand, I didn't really think that the remaining RM1500 would reach my mom's hands. All politicians are the same, who the hell in this world really has the ambition to work for rakyat without any benefits or gains?

But this gentleman could be in exception case...

After the 40 days period, to be exact, it was on week of 23 March that my mom received this invitation card...

Ok, it's long overdue and the ceremony had passed for almost a month! Did that mean my mom forfeited the remaining RM1500 and that money went to someone's pocket?!

"No no no, the money still there for you," said the crew in the office. "All you need is to bring this,"

"And this,"

"Original one lor, then go to this address on the envelope (second photo) to collect it," he replied and assured he "chop" if we failed to collect the money!! Daring huh?! Bet his "next generation" on politician! Bravo!

Anyway, since I was working from home in one of the days, I drove my mom to the address...

After inquiry at the receptionist counter, I went up 2 floors to Bahangian Khidmat Pengurusan (Service Management Department)...

Heading to the department...

Immediately we were attended when we walked into the office. Told the staff about Mesra Usia Emas and my dad's name. After 5 minutes, my mom was counting...

No further questions asked! no hassle! Though some delay, perhaps the invitation card did not reach my mom timely. Haiya, I missed the chance to shake hand with YAB! :P

Gosh! This was the first time I got money from government man! Cash man! Never in my lifetime! Yeah, the second time was few days after I went to collect RM625 for my road tax renewal.

So now we know who should we vote in the next general election. Or, if you are bad enough, you could pray for your parents to pass away within this 3-year period before the next election. Hehe... Damn you if you really think this way!!

No more hesitate. Go register now with your ADUN (state assembly man). If you worry about misuse of your parents' IC, cross the photocopy with "Untuk Mesra Usia Emas". And browse Selangor website for other Rakyat Program and your eligibility. Of course the first criteria is you must be Anak Selangor like me. ;)

It's the building beside Toyota 3S Center, GPS coordinates N3 04.848 E101 34.926...

Last, let's sing Selangor State Anthem...

Duli Yang Maha Mulia
Selamat di atas takhta
Allah lanjutkan usia Tuanku
Rakyat mohon restu
Bawah Duli Tuanku
Bahagia selama-lamanya
Aman dan sentosa
Duli Yang Maha Mulia
